Which "Black-owned" hair brands are still actually Black-owned? I pulled the cap tables and ranked the six that are still truly independent � by who really owns them and what they cost per ounce.

Last time we found the six that AREN'T Black-owned anymore. This is the other half: the ones that still are. There are really only four rungs on the ownership ladder � truly independent, founder-led but took outside money, acquired, and never Black-owned to begin with � and the label will never tell you which rung you're holding. So here's the buying list, with the price per ounce on every pick.

The six still truly independent: Camille Rose (Janell Stephens), TGIN / Thank God It's Natural (the Chris-Tia Donaldson family), Oyin Handmade (Jamyla Bennu), Alikay Naturals (Rochelle Graham-Campbell), Miss Jessie's (Miko Branch), and C�cred (Beyonc�) � plus EDEN BodyWorks (Jasmine Lawrence) and Design Essentials (the McBride family). Then the ones that look independent and aren't: The Doux took a VMG Partners investment, Bread Beauty Supply was acquired by CODB, and African Pride (Godrej), Aunt Jackie's (House of Cheatham) and As I Am (Avlon) were never Black-owned. The pattern is old � SheaMoisture went to Unilever, Carol's Daughter to L'Or�al (and back to founder Lisa Price in 2025), going all the way back to Madam C.J. Walker.
