Dry shampoo recalls exposed a problem the ingredient label couldn’t reveal: benzene contamination. Here’s what the tests found and how to check your can.

The familiar brand on the front wasn’t enough. Unilever traced the issue in its recalled aerosol dry shampoos to the propellant—the gas that pushes the product out. That is the distinction behind “NOT ON THE LABEL”: contamination is different from an intentionally added ingredient.

This buying guide separates the laboratory findings from the manufacturers’ recall notices:

• Valisure’s 2022 testing: 148 batches across 34 brands, with results varying between batches—even within a brand.

• P&G’s December 2021 recall: specified aerosol dry shampoos and conditioners, including products from Pantene, Aussie, Herbal Essences and Waterless.

• Unilever’s October 2022 recall: specified products and lot codes from Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI and TRESemmé, produced before October 2021.

• The format question: powders and non-aerosol pumps remove the aerosol propellant, but that alone does not establish that every alternative is contamination-free.

Both manufacturers said their evaluations did not predict adverse health consequences at the detected levels and described their recalls as precautionary. A finding in one tested batch is not a verdict on every product carrying the same brand name.

The shelf check: match the exact product and identifying codes to the official recall notice below. Follow that notice’s instructions for affected products. This is a review of historical recalls and testing—not a claim that every can sold today is affected. The frequently cited 2 ppm figure is conditional guidance for certain drugs, not a universal legal limit for dry shampoo.
